1. Controlled Access for Instructional Security
In a classroom setting, the teacher needs the ability to secure the door from the inside to prevent intruders or unauthorized entry during class hours. With this function, the teacher can lock the outside lever using a key from the inside (or by turning and holding the inside lever in some models). Once locked, the outside lever is rigid or inoperative, preventing anyone in the corridor from entering. This meets modern school safety requirements for quick lockdown capabilities .
2. Free Egress for Occupants at All Times
Life safety is paramount in educational occupancies. Even when the outside lever is locked, the inside lever always remains free. Students and teachers can exit the classroom instantly by simply pushing down the inside lever, without needing to unlock anything. This complies with NFPA 101 and IBC egress requirements, ensuring no one is trapped during a fire or emergency .
3. Keyed Access for Authorized Personnel
Administrators, custodians, or substitutes can enter the classroom from the corridor using a key. When the key is turned in the outside cylinder, it retracts the latch bolt, allowing entry even when the outside lever is locked. This eliminates the need for teachers to unlock the door manually when someone with a key needs to enter .
4. Auxiliary Dead Latch for Forced-Entry Resistance
The auxiliary dead latch feature prevents "shimming" or "credit card attack." When the door is closed, the auxiliary latch engages and deadlocks the main latch bolt, making it impossible to depress the latch with a tool or knife from the outside. This is critical for classroom security against forced entry .
5. Fire Rating Integrity
UL Listed classroom mortise locks are typically tested to UL 10C with fire ratings of 3 hours or 180 minutes . When installed on a fire-rated classroom door (which is required for corridor walls in schools), the UL Listing ensures the complete assembly maintains its fire resistance, containing smoke and flames in the event of a fire.
6. Durability for High-Traffic Educational Use
Classroom locks must withstand constant use throughout the school day. UL Listed classroom mortise locks are constructed to ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 standards, rated for millions of cycles, ensuring long-term reliability in high-traffic educational environments .
7. Compliance with School Safety Codes
This function directly addresses the requirements found in:
NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) – Free egress required at all times
IBC (International Building Code) – Classroom security and fire protection
State and local education regulations – Lockdown capability with key access
