How a Passage/Closet Latch function American Standard Mortise Lock can be applied in a hotel?

A Passage or Closet Latch function mortise lock, which allows the latch bolt to be operated by a lever from either side at all times, has specific applications within a hotel environment, though it is not suitable for guest room entry doors.

This function is ideal for interior corridor doors leading to back-of-house areas, staff hallways, or service corridors, where free movement is required for hotel personnel. In these locations, a UL Listed mortise lock ensures the door maintains its fire rating and complies with life safety codes, while the heavy-duty construction withstands constant use.

It is also commonly used on public restroom entrances in hotel lobbies, restaurants, or meeting room levels. The passage function allows guests to enter and exit freely without the need for keys or access cards, and the UL Listing guarantees that the lock will not compromise the fire-rated assembly if the door is part of a rated wall.

For mechanical rooms, electrical closets, or housekeeping storage areas, a passage function lock can be installed to keep doors closed for safety and aesthetics while allowing authorized staff to enter without hindrance. In these cases, the fire rating of the UL Listed mortise lock is critical for containing fire and smoke within service shafts and utility spaces.

Additionally, meeting room or banquet hall partitions often use passage function mortise locks on paired doors, allowing guests to move freely between spaces when the rooms are open. The strength and durability of a mortise lock prevent door sagging in heavy-use areas, and the UL Listing ensures compliance with fire codes for assembly occupancies.

For hotel guest room entry doors, however, a dedicated Hotel Function mortise lock must be used, where the outside lever remains rigid or locked at all times and can only be unlocked by a key card or credential. The passage function does not provide the security required for private guest accommodations.
